The Truth Is...

Happy November 1st!!! How did the weekend go? Halloween is often the gateway to the “Hellidays” as I like to call them. On Friday, I challenged my Instagram followers to imagine how they would like to feel today. I got a lot of responses from people who shared they were planning on bingeing and “starting over” Monday but changed their mind after realizing HOW they wanted to feel today would be very different if they were detoxing vs starting Friday!

The truth is: there is NOTHING special about a Monday or the FIRST of any month. Diet culture does that. It uses Mondays, FIRST of the month, 5-7-14-30-60-90 days to market its diet to us. They will tell you “Invest in yourself”, “Yes! It is thousands of dollars, but you will NEVER have to do it again”, “Just eat your points – bonus if you eat LESS”… on and on.

The truth is: The disease of Addiction has NOTHING to do with dieting. This is a biological, psychological, social, spiritual disease. If you have a weight symptom (not all with Food Addiction do), it is a SYMPTOM – not the cause. Diets/methods/programs that DO NOT treat ADDICTION will never be enough to keep you well.

The truth is: Dieticians and Nutritionists who bag on people for abstaining (they like to shame us by using the word “restricting”) are more interested in KEEPING YOU IN THE FOOD than they are in YOUR TRUTH!!! That the cupcake after dinner DOES NOT WORK FOR YOU! It is NOT YOUR TRUTH that you have been “restricting” Halloween Candy and that’s why you binge on it.

The truth is: This is a life-long disease that requires life-long support and treatment in some form or another. This does NOT mean you will be sick for the rest of your life. This does NOT mean you will have to work with an addiction professional every week from now until eternity. What it DOES mean is that you will need treatment (at times) for the rest of your life and SUPPORT, in some form or another, until your soul leaves your body.

The truth is: If we don’t have a higher power/something bigger than ourselves that we give our stuff away to…the FOOD will always be the higher power! We will worship it as some omnipotent god…believing it is powerful enough to remove our worries and woes.

The truth is: There is a solution. It is 10% biological (address the what, how, when eating), 40% psycho-social (increase your peace, increase your resilience), and 50% community and connection (non 12-Step, 12-Step, Church, other).

The truth is: There are people out there who are able and willing to help as soon as you ask.

What is stopping you from seeking the help you need?
